The Marche include Ancona, Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Macerata, Pesaro e Urbino. Rosso Piceno is a DOC in the hilly region near the Adriatic coastal town of Ancona. In the Marche, it is the montepulciano grape (originally from neighboring Abruzzo) which strengthens the wine, providing concentration, color and sweet tannins.
